Thanks to pediatric orthopedic sports medicine surgeon Dr. Byron Izuka, the father of one of our members, we’re excited to share a new affiliation between Aʻo Ā Koa Volleyball Club and Shriners Children’s Hawaiʻi. The affiliation will help support the health of our athletes.

While we always strive to keep our players safe, injuries can sometimes happen in sports. Together with Shriners Children’s, our families will have access to a trusted sports medicine specialist who can answer questions, provide guidance if an injury occurs, and help arrange clinic appointments when needed.

Our affiliation with Shriners Children’s Hawaiʻi is especially unique because their mission ensures that children can receive specialized orthopedic care regardless of insurance coverage or a family’s ability to pay. We are truly grateful and appreciative of this opportunity to work closely with Shriners Children’s Hawaiʻi to ensure our players safely remain at the top of their
game.

How the sports medicine specialists can help:

We’ve had a few injuries during practice and tournaments (dislocated finger, ankle sprain, head injuries) where parents and coaches are unsure if the player should be taken to the Emergency Room, Urgent Care, or if the injury can wait a day or two for an office visit. Now, our coaches and parents can call the Shriners Children’s sports medicine team at the time of the injury to determine the best course of action. Our coaches have the phone number(s) and can help to facilitate the process.

When contacting Shriners Children’s offices at 808-941-4466, please identify yourself as an A’o Ā Koa member or affiliate and the staff will schedule an appointment. If there are concerns regarding the timing of the scheduled appointment, please notify Lindsay Forester at aoakoavolley@gmail.com.
